Now that the dust has settled on Christmas and New Year's 2019 celebrations, it's time to start focusing on the year ahead. With the number of mobile phone users predicted to exceed 5 billion worldwide in 2019 (Statista), this year is a great time to start incorporating SMS into your marketing strategy if you have not already.

Whilst the thought of planning for a whole year can seem overwhelming, it is never too early to start. There are many opportunities and global events in 2019 that can be used for marketing and increasing customer engagement, no matter which industry you are in. February 2019

2019 Six Nations Championship
1st February to 16th March

February starts with the annual rugby union Six Nations Championship. France, England, Italy, Scotland, Wales and defending champions Ireland will battle it out to see who can lift the trophy! A perfect opportunity to run a campaign if you are in the sports industry.

Super Bowl

15th March

Every March a charity fundraising telethon takes place in the UK in which the general public are encouraged to wear red noses and change lives. One way to get involved could be to donate a small percentage of sales on this day to the cause.

St. Patrick’s Day‎
17th March‎

This day is a global celebration of Irish culture in which St Patrick, one of Ireland's patron saints, is remembered. Expect lots of Guinness! The day is celebrated worldwide and you can easily put an Irish spin on a product or service to entice customers.

Britain leaves the EU‎
29th March‎

Britain is expected to leave the European Union on this date. Whilst we aren’t quite sure what exactly will happen, it is important to be aware of this date to ensure you are compliant with any changes in the law.

The clocks go forward by 1 hour in the Northern Hemisphere which means more sunlight but one hour less of sleep for the night!

2019 World Cup of Cricket
30th May to 14th July

September 2019

2019 Rugby World Cup
20th September to 2nd November

One of the biggest sporting events of 2019 will be the Rugby World Cup. The event will be held in Japan for the first time and 20 teams will compete for the trophy. Fingers crossed that a home nation brings it back!

21st September to 6th October

Oktoberfest is quickly becoming a popular event in many countries. The event is a 16 to 18 day event in Munich, Germany. The festival annually serves around 7 million litres of beer, enough to fill nearly three Olympic-sized swimming pools.

On this day the clocks will move backwards by 1 hour. Unfortunately, it will get darker much quicker, but you do get the benefit of an extra hour’s sleep! A great SMS Marketing opportunity to inform customers of any new winter product lines.

Halloween
31st October

Originating from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, Halloween is a time for trick-or-treating, costume wearing and all things pumpkin. In the USA alone, "pumpkin" flavoured products reached $488m across a one-year period ending August 2018 (Shoup, 2018). Almost all businesses should be able to create an engaging Halloween themed SMS marketing campaign.

November 2019

Bonfire Night
5th November

Also known as Guy Fawkes Night, Bonfire Night commemorates the events of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. Market research reveals 38% of Brits purchased products for Bonfire Night in 2018 (Wells, 2018). You don’t have to sell fireworks in order to send out a Bonfire Night related SMS campaign.

Singles Day
11th November

Singles Day started as an "anti-Valentines" day that has now become a shopping holiday thanks to Alibaba. Whilst it is still a small event in the UK, expect its popularity to rise every year. In 2018 it generated $30.8 billion in sales in China, much greater than the Black Friday figures (Davidson, 2018).

Black Friday has become a household term over recent years, with almost all retailers offering discounts and sales. In 2018, 64% of shoppers stated that they would participate in the event and make a purchase (Armstrong, 2018). St Andrew’s Day
